Hi Johnny,
I am a J-term applicant but I am planning on switching careers (within Finance). Could you please elaborate on the part-time intership opprotunities available to J-term students? It would be great if you could give me a rough idea of how many people that are looking for mini-internships of their choice are able to get one...

People tend to find the internships through their own networking or through career clubs that they belong to. To my knowledge, career services doesn't get involved that much in outreach, although recruiters can certainly (and do) post part-time opportunities on our career website.

would it be possible to have a part-time internship? Judging from materials published by Columbia, J-term is more designed for students who do not need a summer internship ?

Any advice for attendees to Columbia's admission event outside USA?

Thanks !

Hello from Vietnam! Yes, it is totally possible to get a part-time internship (I have one, as do many of my classmates) while classes are in session. These part-time internships are not set up by the school on a formal basis. People hear about them from career clubs they're involved in at school, or find them through their own networking. Hope this helps.

John, is it possible for international students to engage in part-time internships as well? Also are there very limited offers from large bulge-bracket investment banks for full-time employment given that they absorb a lot of their summer interns?

I would like to add to the question above. I have seen the employment statistics for the school on the webistie and they dont mention figures for the January program separately. Is there anywhere we can get an idea of this? Specifically figures by company name?

Thanks!

I know some international students who have done part-time or 'mini' internships so it is possible, although I don't know all of the mechanics with regards to work authorizations (i.e. if they are needed, how they work, etc).

Re: bulge bracket firms, they tend to hire first out of their summer intern pool, so whatever spots are left would be the ones that other students would compete for.

Re: J-term recruiting stats by firm, I have no idea about that. My recommendation would be to directly contact admissions, career services, or drop a message on the BusinessWeek b-school forums - I know some admissions folks hang out on there.
